1991/2 Promotion
Winning Season
versus Alloa Athletic
2nd May 1992

When The Sun Shines

During the course of the season, Cowdenbeath had been involved in a 4 horse race for the title. Dumbarton, East Fife and Alloa Athletic were in with a chance to gain promotion in the last few weeks of the season. As fate would have it, Cowdenbeath would have to face Alloa on the last day of the season with Alloa needing to win the game to take the second promotion spot behind Dumbarton.

John Brownlie's side had been on the receiving end of a 4-2 midweek defeat at the prvious encounter at Recreation Park, missing a penalty in the process with the score at 3-2. Alloa had played the majority of the first half of their seasons' fixtures away from home due to development work at the ground and had put an impressive run of results together.

For both teams, this was to be the CUP FINAL.

With so much at stake a crowd of 5,050 turned out to see the match, delaying the kick-off by 15 minutes. In a nail-biting game, for both sets of supporters, with few clear cut chances Cowdenbeath survived with a 0-0 draw which saw them gain promotion for the first time in 20 years. It had been a long wait for this success, unfortunately things were to turn sour following this game as manager Brownlie was fired and the promotion winning team fell to pieces under the new manager. How easy it seemed to be to undo the hard work and historical achivement of these players and management.
